# 1.4 Definitions (Glossary)

**Key Terms and Protocol Language**

This section defines the key technical and operational terms used throughout this document. These definitions are intended to provide clarity and ensure consistent interpretation of protocol mechanics.

***

#### **GateKey (GKT)** <a href="#gatekey-gkt" id="gatekey-gkt"></a>

GateKey (GKT) refers to the native protocol token used within the GateKey ecosystem. It functions as the primary unit for activating membership tiers, participating in governance, and receiving reward distributions.

***

#### **Membership Tier** <a href="#membership-tier" id="membership-tier"></a>

A Membership Tier represents a defined level of participation within the GateKey protocol. Tiers are assigned automatically based on the number of GKT tokens locked by a user. Each tier grants specific access rights, reward eligibility, and governance privileges.

Typical tier levels include:

* **Starter Tier** — Entry-level membership
* **Pro Tier** — Intermediate-level membership
* **Elite Tier** — Highest-level membership

***

#### **Locking** <a href="#locking" id="locking"></a>

Locking refers to the process of committing GKT tokens into the protocol for a defined duration. Locked tokens activate membership status and remain under protocol rules until they are withdrawn or unlocked.

Locking ensures that membership reflects actual commitment rather than temporary token holding.

***

#### **Stake** <a href="#stake" id="stake"></a>

Stake refers to the act of depositing GKT tokens into the protocol's locking system. The staking amount determines the user's membership tier and reward eligibility.

***

#### **Epoch** <a href="#epoch" id="epoch"></a>

An Epoch is a fixed time interval during which rewards are calculated and distributed. At the end of each epoch cycle, eligible participants receive rewards based on their staking balance and membership tier.

In the GateKey protocol, epochs operate on scheduled distribution intervals.

***

#### **Snapshot** <a href="#snapshot" id="snapshot"></a>

A Snapshot is an automated system event that records user balances at a specific point in time. Snapshots determine membership tiers, reward eligibility, and governance participation rights.

Snapshots prevent manipulation by ensuring that rewards are calculated using verified balance data.

***

#### **Rewards** <a href="#rewards" id="rewards"></a>

Rewards refer to the distribution of GKT tokens or protocol-based incentives granted to eligible participants. Rewards are calculated based on staking activity and tier level during each epoch cycle.

***

#### **Governance** <a href="#governance" id="governance"></a>

Governance refers to the decision-making framework used to manage protocol parameters and updates. Eligible members may participate in governance by voting on proposals that affect the future development of the GateKey ecosystem.

***

#### **Protocol** <a href="#protocol" id="protocol"></a>

The Protocol refers to the combined system of smart contracts, rules, and infrastructure that powers GateKey operations. It defines how membership, rewards, and participation are managed on-chain.

***

#### **Smart Contract** <a href="#smart-contract" id="smart-contract"></a>

A Smart Contract is a blockchain-based program that automatically executes protocol rules. Within GateKey, smart contracts manage staking, tier validation, reward distribution, and governance processes.

***

#### **Treasury** <a href="#treasury" id="treasury"></a>

The Treasury refers to the allocation of tokens reserved for ecosystem growth, development, rewards, and operational sustainability.

Treasury funds may be used to support incentives, infrastructure upgrades, and long-term protocol development.
